While Men Slept

While men slept - that's the explanation Jesus gave for the presence of weeds in Matt. 13:25. "While men slept, the enemy came and sowed weeds in the wheat." - abortion became an acceptable means of population control, homosexuality became an acceptable lifestyle, sex outside of marriage became common behavior, teenage pregnancy reached epidemic proportions, our society grew addicted to pornography and gambling, and alcoholism became our number one health concern - while men slept.
Individualism, pluralism, secularism, and apathy rendered American religion impotent, totally incapable of doing anything about our moral and spiritual crises. No one seemed to know what was right or wrong, and those who did didn't seem to care. So everyone did what felt good to him or herself. While men slept the weeds grew.
Don't you think it's time we awaken out of our sleep? New Testament Christians "turned the world upside down" by preaching Jesus Christ. They went everywhere preaching. They made a great impact on the world around them and many people became followers of Christ. But that was their Number One Priority!
Will our church historians write that in our time America became a Godless nation, forbidding the mention of God in public education or at public functions? Will they say that our motto, "In God we trust", became unconstitutional? While we slept!
The Lord says, "Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead. And Christ will give you light" (Eph. 5:14)

Answer to last week's question.

  • It was lions that killed foreigners who moved into Israel (II Kings 17:24-26) [What animals killed foreigners who moved into Israel?]

This weeks Bible question:

  • What biblical character said, "I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all?"

Answer next week.

AN INVITATION is extended to all to a period of singing, devotion and fellowship at the home of Jim and Lucy Vinson Saturday night, October 25, from 7 to 9 P.M. Ask a member for their address.

Our new Spanish Speakers Bible Study class, headed up by Bro. Tomas Davila got off to a good start on sunday. Fifteen attended the very first class. It is hoped that this number will increase in the future. Several members stayed for worship services. We should all encourage them as much as we can.

Seen on church marquees

  • "Avoid the christmas rush - come to church this Sunday"
  • "Come early for a good seat in the back."
  • "A man's character is like a fence, it cannot be strengthened by whitewash."
  • "Don't let the littleness in others bring out the littleness in you."
  • "God answers knee mail."

One At a Time. . . . . . . .
What can I do
(to help Church Growth)?

Prepare for people: Before we approach those we identify as having need, we ought to prepare ourselves. We should know what we are going to say and how we might answer some objections. It all goes back to planning. Jesus spent over three years preparing the apostles to change the world.
(Luke 24:44-49)

"It is hard to convince your children that the work of the church is really important when you are not taking an active part in the work of the church.
"It is hard to convince your children that Faithfulness to the church is the most important loyalty in life when you permit them to forsake services to engage in other activities."
"It is hard to convince your children that the church is the body of Christ when you are indifferent to the welfare of the members of that body."

Quill Pen From the pen of John Hobbs:

Instrumental Music In Worship

With increasing frequency I hear about congregations in the Churches of Christ choosing to include musical instruments in the worship service. As I read about their decisions, none present a biblical reason for their decisions to add the instrument. These churches are simply saying (1) God does not forbid its use, and (2) they like it. It is appalling that in many instances members are saying their elders have approved the use of instrumental music, thus giving them the assurance that their actions are acceptable. When were elders authorized to alter or compromise God's will?

We must realize that just because an elder of group of elders state a policy, that does not mean God approves of it. Read your Bible! Where did the apostasy start? From Acts 20:17-32 it was in the eldership!. We must not give "blind obedience" to any group of elders. We must test any doctrine with the word of God.(I John 4:1).

The Oak Hills church in San Antonio recently took the name "Church of Christ" off their sign. (Good! because they are not a Church of Christ). The elders there stated in print that they had spent a year in study and decided it was alright to use instrumental music in worship. But, who are they? They are just men. They are not inspired. They certainly are not very scholarly. I am not impressed with their wisdom, logic and reasoning. Just because they say it is OK, does that make it right? No! Let us call a spade a spade. They are false teachers (Matt. 7:15) teaching false doctrine (II Timothy 4:2). They are leaning upon their own understanding and not God's word (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Jeroboam changed the correct worship and received God's punishment (I Kings II). The same thing will happen to all who change the true worship (John 4:23-24).

In Christian Love,
John Hobbs

P.S. It is nice to know our elders agree with this article.
