ACROSS THE STREET

Cross the street: You never know
But what the beggar passing there
May be a King, with gifts to share-
Gifts to set your heart aglow.
You never now.
Cross the street: You never know

But what the little child you see
May someday rich and famous be-
But now he's crying and his need
Is for your help, so help, indeed - You never know.

But what someday, lonely down some distant way,
Your child may tread a rocky road
And some kind friend may share his load,
You never know, cross the street - You never know

But what the friend who's there today,
Tomorrow may have moved away-
Today's the day to do-
It's still your privilege to advance!
For this may be your final chance-
Your soul, tonight, to God may go,
You never know.

Answer to last week's question.

  • John The Baptist was the New Testament character who wore a camel's hair garment. (Matthew 3:4) [What new Testament character wore a camel's hair garment?]

This weeks Bible question:

  • What New Testament character asked the question, "What is truth?

Answer next week.

BAPTISM. . . . .
Ashley Cox was baptized into Christ on Wednesday night, July 23. She has stated her desire to be a member here to worship and work with us. Let's make her welcome and pray for her spiritual growth and strength. Ask a member for her address!

"The Christian therefore is always bound to have a great advantage over the modern pagan. Simply because he knows where he is going whereas the pagan knows nothing.

The pagan must always be the pessimist, for he must always feel that his life is too short to give a man a chance, and the Christian will always be the optimist, for he knows that this life is long enough to give a man a chance for eternity.

That is why the Christian can be joyful. That is why the pagan is sad and depressed. He has only one world, one life, one earth and that will be taken away."

COMING EVENTS

August 3 - Pot-luck Sunday. There will not be a men's business meeting following lunch today. Instead, the men are invited to the elders meeting tomorrow night, August 4, here at the building at 7:00 P.M.
August 3 - Bro. Trent Kennedy will be the speaker at our evening services. Let's all come out and encourage this young man.
August 4 - Medina Children's Home grocery truck will be here to pick up PINE SOL. Let's give generously. This item is not available at the food bank, so we need to purchase it and bring it to the building or donate cash so they can buy it from their resources.
August 10 - Following evening service, let's come out and "pound" John and Mary Etta. See Mary Grimes or Lou Dell Mayfield for details.
August 23 - Leadership dinner here at the building. Following a great meal, we will have a guest speaker. Make plans now to come. Mack & Charlotte Key will be preparing the meal.

A little boy unconsciously voiced a popular philosophy of life when he told his sister, "If one of us would get out of this swing there would be more room for me."

"Be good, get good, and do good. Do all the good you can; to all the people you can; in all the ways you can; as often as you can; for as long as you can."

From the pen of John Hobbs:

Common Characteristics Of a Growing Church

  1. A constant emphasis on evangelism.

  2. A constant emphasis on Bible school.

  3. A spirit of love, unity and harmony.

  4. Leaders are men of character, reputation, zeal and vision.

  5. The members have a will to work.

  6. A constant emphasis on visitation and fellowship.

  7. The Church plans for the future.

  8. The Church has a broad appeal.

  9. The preacher preaches strong, biblical sermons from the pulpit.

  10. There must be continuity in the pulpit ministry.

These are ten characteristics of a growing church. At Ninth and Main, we want to reach out! Prior to October 5, we will have a mass mail-out, inviting people to our all-church pot-luck friendship meal. If you have someone you would like invited, please give me their names and addresses. Special day attendance drives are helpful for growth because they promote enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is a key factor for church growth.

Important Note: On August 23rd at 5:00 P.M. we will have a leadership dinner here at the building. Everyone is invited. We will have a guest speaker after the dinner. An elder and I will each speak about 15 minutes.

Please let me know if you are coming! We need to know by Sunday, August 17 so that we will know how much food to prepare.

In Christian Love,
