The Heart of a Child
Whatever you write on the heart of a child
       No water can wash away.
The sand may be shifted when billows are wild
And the efforts of time may decay.
Some stories may perish, some songs be forgot
But this graven record - time changes it not.
Whatever you write on the heart of a child,
A story of gladness or care.
The heaven has blessed or earth has defiled,
      Will linger unchangeable there.

A Smile
A smile is such a funny thing,
      It wrinkles up your face.
And when its gone you have to find
      It's secret hiding place
But far more wonderful it is
To see what smiles can do:
You smile at one, he smiles at you,
And so one smile makes two,
And since a smile can do so much
      By cheering hearts of care,
Let's all just keep on smiling
      Till smiles go everywhere!

Answer to our last BIBLE question:

  • John The Baptize was the person thrown into prison for criticizing a king's marriage.  (Matthew 14:3-4) [Who was thrown into prison for criticizing a king's marriage?]

This weeks question:

  • In Revelation, what horse represents death?

        Answer next week.

Last Wednesday, May 7, the elders met at the home of Bro. Jim Vinson. After a delicious meal prepared by their wives, the elders sat and discussed the work of the church. Since this was primarily a meeting to bring the new elders up to date on the work of the church, not many hard and fast decisions were made.
The degree of enthusiasm is encouraging and the zeal to get things done is apparent.
While there will not be wholesale changes, we can all expect minor changes to occur in the coming days and months.
The elders earnestly solicit your support and your prayers. After all, the work of the church is for all members, not just the leaders.
They plan to meet again on Monday, June 2, at 7:00 P.M. If you have anything to bring up, just tell any one of the elders and they will discuss it.
Our promise still stands - We can't promise you a solution, but we can promise you a discussion.
We also need to support and pray for our new deacons. This office is not usually spoken of as frequently as the eldership, but it is still a vital function of the Church.

COMING EVENTS
May 18 - Bro. Phil Palmer will conduct our song service. Bro. Palmer is the brother of Mary Etta Hobbs, and is a missionary to Africa.

May 31 - "Cherokee Day". Cherokee Children's Home will have their annual food/fund drive. Everyone is welcome. We look forward to having their Executive Director speak to us later in the year.

June 1 - Bi-Monthly potluck friendship meal. come and bring somebody with you. Good food, good fun, good fellowship and a good outreach program for our church.

Our condolences to the Knight family, who lost a loved one last week. Bro. Floyd Knight passed away.

On Saturday, May 3, John Mayfield and a group of men installed a cooler in Peggy Curtis' house. It was felt that she would not be able to tolerate the heat when she comes home from the nursing center.
The church paid for the cooler, and Brother Don Cheek donated a room air conditioner for Peggy's bedroom.

As mentioned elsewhere in this bulletin, we were able to send $2030.00 to tornado relief work. It is only through the generosity and love shown by the members here that we are able to do such.
The elders wish to thank everyone, and we can be assured that the money will be used in the best manner possible to alleviate

Ninth & Main Responds Again

Everyone is aware of the fact that tornadoes have recently struck middle U.S.A. These states are known as Tornado Alley. Lives have been lost and billions of dollars of destruction have occurred because of these tornadoes.

Ninth and Main church of Christ has responded. We have sent $2030.00 to the Church of Christ Relief Effort in Nashville, Tennessee. This means that our brethren will have oversight of the expenditure of these funds.

I would personally like to praise two groups of people. First, our elders. We should all be impressed with their quick decision in this crisis situation. Many of our brethren need our immediate help because of this disaster.

Secondly, I would like to praise all of the members at Ninth & Main. Your generosity and love shown to all these hurting people demonstrates your Christian love.

May God bless you and give you peace!

In Christian Love,
John Hobbs

(Editor's Note: To those of you who were concerned for the safety of Becca Rhea and Philip Autry because of the tornadoes. We have word about both of them, and they are fine. More information is posted on the bulletin board.)
