The First Rock

It was early in the morning and Jesus arose and went to the temple to teach others about the Heavenly Father.
Suddenly, there was a commotion. Some Pharisees and their friends brought in a woman caught in the sin of adultery. Why they didn't bring the guilty male is not known. Punishment for this crime was execution by stoning.
Jesus paused in His teaching and looked at the crowd and the woman caught in the crime. The he began to write on the ground, perhaps to show his unwillingness to be an earthly judge.
The Pharisees insisted that Jesus tell them what to do with the woman. Likely, they wanted Jesus to agree with their plans to stone her. If He didn't, they could charge Him with not following the law. What Jesus did was look these accusers in the eye and say, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."
And, once again Jesus began writing on the ground. When He looked up again, the woman's accusers were gone.
This beautiful story from John chapter 8 teaches us the spirit that we should have. Are you prone to throw rocks? If you are make sure there is no sin in your life…for only the sinless have the right to throw that first rock!

Answer to our last BIBLE question:

  • Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. (Luke 9:28-36) [Who appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration?]

This weeks question:

  • What pagan god is mentioned most in the Bible?

        Answer next week.

As most of you know Eddie & Margaret Howard's son was wounded in Iraq. He has already left the combat zone and at last report was in Rota, Spain. In order to help defray any added expenses the Howards might have, money has been collected for them. Any one wishing to add to the fund, just hand your donation to any of the men of the congregation and they will see it gets to the elders.

CONGRATULATIONS

"Those of us back home in America can't do much, but there is one thing we can do.
During WWII, a man in England organized a group of people who stopped whatever they were doing at a prescribed hour every day for one minute to pray for England, its people and peace.
There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. If you would like to participate, every evening at 8:00 P.M. central time stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the United States, its citizens, in and out of uniform, and for peace.
If you know of anyone else who would like to participate, pass this along."

Paraphrased from Sterling City COC Bulletin,
Who got it from another source.

From the pen of John Hobbs:

EFFORT?

When I was playing college football, my coach wrote one word on the blackboard--"EFFORT?"

Certainly effort is an important attribute in football. Effort is also important in any endeavor of life. One's commitment to any cause is revealed by the amount of effort put into that cause. This is my 28th year to teach math in public schools. We offer free tutoring before and after school. Some students claim that they really care and want to pass the course. However, some of them never take notes, seldom turn in homework and never take advantage of the free tutoring. Their lack of effort reveals their true commitment.

Just like football and math class, effort in our Christian life is very revealing. If we do not attend services regularly and faithfully, our commitment to the cause of Christ is also revealed.

We all need to examine ourselves (II Corinthians 13:5). We all need to ask ourselves: What kind of "EFFORT" do I put into my Christian life?

In Christian Love,
John Hobbs

P.S. - This Sunday, April 6, is pot-luck fellowship meal Sunday. Please make every "effort" to be here and bring a guest with you!!!!
